Excel: Formula Auditing

Excel worksheets can be full of formulas and functions and in many instances you did not create them and are trying to decipher how a formula was created. It might also be that you created it some time ago and you are reviewing what you did.

You could simply click on the cell and look at the formula or function and see what cells are being used. Alternatively you might have a value and you want to check on where it is being used.

The other thing you might just want to check if you set up a formula correctly or showing someone how you did it.

This is where formula auditing comes in, it is really easy to use and it visually shows you what cells are being used in the formula or you can click on a cell and see where that value is being used.

Adobe Reader App for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch

PDFs are amazingly useful documents that can be read on so many devices, in many cases you don’t have to install any software and if you do it is freely available on the adobe.com website. If you have an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch them you can easily read PDFs on these devices. However, if you install the free Adobe Reader from the App Store you can easily find them as they are stored here and you can even highlight text, add notes and draw on the PDF. These are then automatically saved.

You can also search the PDF and when you’re done you can email it or even save to Dropbox right from the app.

In the following video not only will you find out how to do all of this but also how to get your PDF from an email or Dropbox into the app.

Handbrake Videos That Are Broken Up

If you are using Handbrake you may find that the video you have converted breaks up, perhaps the video is choppy or pixelated.

Here is a solution that has worked for many people who have dropped me a line about it.

One thing that used to work is installing VLC from videolan.org, VLC is a good video player that is free and available for Windows and Mac.

Windows 7

This fix will also help if you have been getting the error message “Your source may be copy protected, badly mastered or in a format which Handbrake does not support”

Here are the step by steps to get things up and running.

  1. Download and install the 64 bit version of Handbrake for Windows from http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php. Make a note of which folder you install it in. By default it is usually C:\Program Files\Handbrake.
  2. You need a file which is libdvdcss.dll and you need the 64-Bit version which is available from VideoLan at http://download.videolan.org/pub/libdvdcss/1.2.11/win64/libdvdcss-2.dll and move or copy it to your Handbrake folder that you noted above. As mentioned it is usuallyC:\Program Files\Handbrake.
  3. The file you have downloaded is called libdvdcss-2.dll which needs to be renamed to to libdvdcss.dll in your Handbrake folder, this is the folder you just copied the file to.
  4. Now try it on a short clip, if you have one, to test it out. I use a short clip so that I can see if has worked without having to wait for a whole film to be converted.

Watch the video below to see how it is done.

Mac OSX

This should be as simple as installing VLC on your Mac which is available from videolan.org

Converting PDFs to Word

If you have ever had to get text or images from a PDF file to a Word document or another word processor then this tutorial will help you out. It used to be that PDF files were made not only to make them universal to work on different systems like Windows or Mac and it also meant you didn’t need the software like Word, Illustrator, Excel etc to read the document, but it also meant you couldn’t copy the material from them, this gave them some protection. However, that is not why they were created, well now you can extract that information.

Here are two tutorial, one on how to do this using Windows and the other on how to do it using a Mac, there are many similarities

Restricting Access to Children on Their iPod touch, iPad and iPhone

Children have a habit of doing things you don’t want them to whether it is surfing the Internet or downloading movies, TV shows or apps. On an Apple device like an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad they could be buidling up huge costs on your account. You can also set a monthly spend using iTunes which will help keep spending under control. Here I show you how to keep children safe on these devices and also keep your wallet in check. If you want to set up an iTunes account for a child without a credit card see this tutorial – click here.

Creating an iTunes Account without a Debit or Credit Card

If you want to set up an iTunes account you have to enter a means of payment, but what if you don’t have a debit or credit card to do this or you want your children to have an account and you want to control their spending, you could do this by giving them gift certificates. However, there is a way around this where you can set up an account with the option to choose none as a means of payment. Going to iTunes no creating an Apple ID will not work.

See the video below to see now to do this. If you need to restrict children or give them a monthly allowance on Apple devices and iTunes click here to see how to do this.

Panorama Feature in the iPhone Camera

No they did not include this as a feature for the iPad and iPad mini, I have no idea why. However, if you do have an iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 then you can use this feature and it is so simple to use compared to other versions of creating a panoramic photo using a regular digital camera.

Here is this video you will see how to use it and also change the direction you take the photo from left to right to right to left.

New iPhone, iPad or iPad Mini for Christmas

If you’re luck enough to have got a new iPhone, iPad or iPad mini then you must be grinning from ear to ear. The people at Apple have made it simple to get started and all you have to do is follow the instructions on screen, however, there are a lot of features that you may find handy that it doesn’t tell you when you start up like the built in dictionary, the panorama feature in the camera for the iPhone, Google Maps, sending a message when getting a call, email signatures, adding symbols in text, faster typing, copying and pasting and so much more.

On thing I do recommend is going to Settings and choosing iCloud where you can either use an existing Apple ID or get a new one and set it to backup using iCloud.

Have a look at my video clips which cover these and so much more by clicking on this link http://www.jargonfreehelp.com/?page_id=65 and have a merry Christmas.
